The following procedures would be best for your vision type.

VISION GOALS
1. Straight distance vision and use of reading glasses for near. This is good for those who lead an active outdoor lifestyle.

2. Mono Vision where one eye is treated for Distance vision and one eye is treated for Near Vision. This is good for those who do both distance and near tasks regularly.

3. Modified near vision (this is useful for very near sighted or far sighted persons who work at small near tasks most of the time.

Each person needs to be evaluated and counseled as to which type of vision meets their wants and needs.

MONO VISION
This is an option for those people over 40 who require reading glasses for near vision tasks. Mono Vision gives you good distance and near vision by treating one eye for distance and one eye for near vision or partial near vision. Many people learn to adapt to mono vision with excellent results. Your dominant eye is usually treated for distance vision and your non-dominant eye is slightly under corrected for near vision - your eyes learn to work together after an adaptation period and many people need no glasses for distance or near with this option. Millions of people wear mono vision contact lenses with great success.

LASIK
Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomeilusis - is the most common refractive procedure. During LASIK surgery a corneal flap is created by the INTRALASE femtosecond laser. This flap is then lifted and the prescription is treated with the Excimer laser on the residual corneal tissue. The flap is then repositioned and the treatment is complete. There are two types of LASIK - TRADIDITIONAL AND CUSTOM VUE. Each patient will be evaluated to determine which procedure is the best treatment for their needs.

PRK
Photo-Refractive Keratectomy became popular worldwide in the early 1990's when the excimer laser was first approved by the FDA for laser vision correction. During PRK surgery the corneal surface is treated instead of the inner tissue as in LASIK. The results are similar to LASIK, but the healing process is slower and there is more discomfort for the first few days post operatively. Many patients who have preexisting problems such as corneal cell problems, severe dry eye, thin corneas or occupations that require PRK have excellent outcomes with PRK.

CUSTOMVUE
WaveScan technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. This technology has now been applied to laser vision correction, measuring imperfections in the eye never before measured using standard methods for glasses and contact lenses. WaveScan-based digital technology identifies and measures imperfections in your eyes 25 times more precisely than standard methods. The powerful WaveScan software translates the information into a set of CustomVue treatment instructions for the laser.

PRELEX
PREsbyopic Lens Exchange is an alternative procedure to Laser vision correction and other refractive surgical procedures. The primary difference between cataract surgery and PRELEX is that cataract surgery is performed to remove a patient's cloudy lens (cataract) and PRELEX is performed to reduce one's dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Our new multifocal lenses RESTORE AND REZOOM enable people to see well at both distance and near.

COMBINED PROCEDURES
Many patients have complex prescriptions that do not fit in any one category and therefore may require combined procedures. These patients will be treated in stages and although the surgical procedure time may be slower to complete the outcome is improved.

People with large amounts of astigmatism may need overlay treatments such as a Limbal Relaxing Incision (this is a small incision made at the greatest zone of astigmatism), to decrease their astigmatism to levels the lasers can treat.

Patients who have PRELEX or VERISYSE procedures may require LASIK or PRK overlay to give them the best outcome.

Each patient is counseled as to the possible treatments and options available to create optimal results. No treatment is "the only option" and Dr. Lipsky may determine during the course of your post operative healing that an overlay of another treatment may be more beneficial. This is a medical decision and there are no charges for overlay treatments performed by Dr. Lipsky during your post operative period.
